The games were entirely playable, and I have no idea what in the world you mean by "nearly unwinnable". One has every opportunity to catch an Abra early on, whereupon that "brokenness" becomes quite... pleasant. *cackles under breath*

Only by pure luck. Abra was and still is famous for running away, and this was before the advent of Taunt.

...Yes, that was what Thunder Wave and any reserves of excess cash were for.

Besides, Alakazam fell over when hit with strong physical-element attacks. As for the primary users of Psychic-types, Sabrina hardly qualified as a game-breaker, and Gary's Alakazam could be dispatched with a bit of battering. Squishy Mages at their finest.

Mewtwo may have been game-breaking in battle, but as you never fought any Mewtwo-users in-game and you were provided with the Master Ball to claim the prize itself, that seems irrelevant.

Fair enough.

Then what about the mechanic of the PokeBalls missing the Pokemon they were trying to catch? Obviously it was problematic enough that the creators saw fit to change the mechanics of their own canon on that front, realistic as it may have been.
